Bernard Day CAPS Post #1- Age Identity

I am a non-traditional student. Age identity comes into play for me every time I step on campus. Being a 47 year old student is a challenge at times. Things are so different for me now compared to the first time I attended college. We had no internet then. If we needed to look up information, we had to use reference books (encyclopedias, dictionaries) at the library. We definitely did not do blogs. I am learning new things all the time with this class. Not just about identities but also about using today's technology.

Age identity is defined in our text book as the identification with the cultural conventions of how we should act, look, and behave according to our age.(Martin and Nakayama 2009) If I behaved according to my age, I would not be in college. I can't let perceptions and conventional ways of thinking stop me from attaining my goals.

Elizabeth is an Outreach School student in Torrington, Wyoming. She is also one of the first recipients of the Edelweiss Fund Scholarship fro non-traditional students. Learn about Elizabeth's experience as a non-traditional student, working mother, and scholarship recipient.
